Social Media: How it Effects Us
I think 99.9% of people use social media. Whether it be instagram, snapchat, facebook we all have some use of the applications. And this might be an unpopular opinion, but I really don't think ALL forms of social media are terrible. It's fun! Honestly, sometimes it keeps me entertained for hours. However, there are some aspects of socials that have had me fall into a deep hole. Constantly seeing tall, thin instagram models while scrolling through. Seeing girls with perfect skin and plump lips. Perfect teeth, sculpted shoulders, and flat stomachs. It's. Not. Realistic.
The effects social media has on young women these days is horrendous. Trust me, I would know. I don't think it uncommon for girls to be insecure about who they are while using social media. Society puts this standard into our heads that really messes with our heads. Tell me there hasn't been a time you scrolled through your for you page on tiktok, and saw a video of a girl dancing and all the comments are “I’m not eating today,” or “I wasn’t hungry anyway.” Yeah. This. This is now the perception we have of other girls' bodies. And it goes both ways. To the girls that receive these comments; I’m sure you have insecurities of your own, and that's okay. What I’m trying to get at here, is that everybody in the 21st century is constantly surrounded by social media. You are always going to see a video or picture of the girl you want to look like. But let me let you in on something. You will always be you. And that is okay. Change your body if you want to. Change your hair if you want to. But don’t let anyone you see influence you.
How to Deal With It
Honestly, body image regarding social media is hard to overcome. Because again, you. are. constantly. surrounded by it. One of my favorite things to do when I feel this is affecting me is to write it down. I get all my feelings out, and even write down things I am grateful for.
-I am grateful that I eat everyday.
-I am grateful that I can move my body freely.
-I am grateful that I have a healthy body.
There are little things you might not even notice how lucky you are to have. So just try your best to put everything into perspective. It’s not easy, but it's not supposed to be.
YOU GOT THIS.
Xo,
Jess
